The group is always on the lookout for dynamic, motivated individuals who wish to work on the mechanical properties of crystalline hybrid materials, or want to explore the crossover between porous hybrids and the non-crystalline domain.

Particularly, we are always happy to discuss offering support for applications for scholarships and fellowships. Please see the list below for some examples.


Available PhD Studentships

There are possibilities for a PhD studentship to start in October 2023, in the Department of Materials and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge. Interested parties should get in touch with Tom as soon as possible, and certainly before December 2021.

In addition, students interested in applying for one of the competitive funding options listed below should send a CV and cover letter to Tom.

The deadline for applying for a PhD starting in October is always at the start of the preceding December, unless otherwise stated. Please get in touch with tom (tdb35@cam.ac.uk) well in advance of this date.

Applications for support for the following schemes are particularly welcome:

Domestic and international students may apply for funded PhD studentships in December each year in a highly competitive University-wide program.. The link above can be used to search for the various scholarships for which you are eligible. 

  • China Scholarship Council 

This is a scheme for Chinese Nationals, and will fully fund a PhD in the University of Cambridge (Tuition, Travel and Stipend).

This scheme closes in July each year, and allows a student from a Commonwealth country to pursue a PhD in the UK.

PhD scholarships are available from a selection of countries (see link above). The deadline is in July each year.


Available Post-Doctoral Research Positions

There are no currently advertised Post Doctoral Research Positions. We would love to hear from you if you would like support in an applications for funding for the below schemes. Please send a CV and cover letter to Tom, a minimum of 5 weeks before the application deadline.

  • College Research Fellowships (3-5 Years)

These become available from the end of August to January each year. Each college at Cambridge offers its own competition – details of which are usually found here.

These are available for European, or Global researchers who have not worked, or lived in the United Kingdom and wish to spend 24 months in the group. The deadline for applications are typically in September. Researchers contacting Tom in August will unfortunately not be considered.

  • China Scholarship Council (CSC) Fellowship

Requests for 24 month stays should be discussed with Tom in the first instance. The group has a successful track record in this area.

This is an excellent scheme from the Royal Society, with the next round due in late 2023.


Summer Undergraduate and Visiting PhD Placements

Due to Department restrictions, we are currently unable to accept visiting PhD students for durations between 2 weeks and 1 year.


Part III MSci Projects

The group offers around 2 projects each year, details on which can be found through the department website. Interested students are encouraged to contact Tom to discuss the projects.
